Get up close and personal with Hong Kong’s fascinating history by visiting Aberdeen Harbour. The harbour is the home of hundreds who reside on sampans and fishing junks in this iconic water village. Their traditional lifestyle provides a rare glimpse into Hong Kong’s past.
You’ll no doubt find beautiful beaches for swimming, sun bathing or windsurfing, but don’t pass up a visit to Murray House, a 160-year-old restored three-storey colonial building that was dismantled in 1982 from its original site in Central and then rebuilt in Stanley. It now houses the Hong Kong Maritime Museum as well as restaurants. Complement the colonial architectural style of Murray House is Blake Pier nearby.
For outdoor shopping, visit Stanley Market, a popular village on the sunny south side of Hong Kong Island. Enjoy the gentle pace of its relaxed ambience, surrounding sea and bargain buys that have made it world famous. Buy brand-name clothing and accessories, or hunt for the fascinating souvenirs, ornaments and other Oriental knick-knacks.
Learn about ancient Chinese traditions by paying your tribute to the statues of Kwun Yum and Tin Hau. Both gods are worshipped as protectors of fishermen, according to ancient tradition. You can also visit the nearby colonial-style Repulse Bay. It was a luxury hotel built in the 1920s and today houses designer shops and award-winning restaurants. Swimming or walking along this beautiful resort beach is also great fun and a thoroughly romantic thing to do in Hong Kong.
